Electroacupuncture

A combination of fine needles at active points and a gentle electrical impulse for pain, muscle spasm and tissue relaxation. Best suited for resolving pain and neurological conditions — herniated discs, nerve entrapments caused by spinal compression, as well as recovery after a stroke and hemiplegia (paralysis of an arm or leg).

Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture combines precise placement of needles on active muscle and nerve points with gentle electrical stimulation. It's best suited for resolving pain and neurological conditions — herniated discs, nerve entrapments caused by spinal compression, as well as rehabilitation after a stroke and in hemiplegia, where it helps with the recovery of a paralysed arm or leg. The electrical impulse strengthens and prolongs the effect of the treatment — giving deeper muscle relaxation, a stronger analgesic response, and activating the neuromuscular system where the needle alone isn't enough.

How we work

Needles are placed at the relevant points based on assessment and palpation. Electrodes are then attached, carrying a gentle electrical impulse. The patient feels a pulsing sensation and a gradual release of tension.

What electroacupuncture is

Electroacupuncture combines two methods: the precise placement of fine needles at active points and a gentle electrical impulse carried through those needles during the session. Electrodes are attached to a pair of needles, and the device emits a low-frequency pulse that continuously stimulates the treated point.

Unlike standard dry needling, where the needle “works” briefly — through a twitch response and placement — electroacupuncture extends the stimulation throughout the entire session. The effect is more intense and lasts longer.

The difference from dry needling and acupuncture

Dry needling targets trigger points — hypersensitive spots within the muscle itself — and looks for a twitch response (a muscle jerk) to confirm the point has been hit. The focus is exclusively on the musculoskeletal system.

Classical acupuncture is based on the system of meridians and energy points.

Electroacupuncture, in a physiotherapy context, uses an anatomical approach similar to dry needling, but adds electrical stimulation. Needles are placed on the muscle, the motor point, or along a nerve — depending on the problem. The current prolongs and intensifies muscle relaxation and the analgesic effect.

What electroacupuncture is useful for

  • Recovery after a stroke and hemiplegia — targeted stimulation of weakened muscles and motor points speeds up the return of movement in a paralysed arm or leg, prevents atrophy and supports neuroplasticity during rehabilitation
  • Herniated disc — when a disc herniation presses on a nerve root and causes pain, tingling or weakness down the arm or leg; the electrical impulse along the nerve calms the pain and supports the recovery of nerve function
  • Nerve entrapments caused by spinal compression — sciatica, cervicobrachial syndrome and other conditions where a nerve root is under pressure; the electrical impulse along the nerve calms the pain and helps restore conduction
  • Nerve pain and tingling — conditions where electrical stimulation along the nerve gives a better result than manual pressure
  • Chronic muscle pain that doesn’t respond enough to manual work alone
  • Stubborn contractures and spasms — muscles that fall back into spasm after brief relief
  • Rehabilitation after injury — activating weak muscles while simultaneously relaxing the antagonists
  • Chronic neck and shoulder pain — trapezius, levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoid

What the treatment looks like

The needles are thin — thinner than an injection needle. The insertion is minimal. Once they’re placed at the relevant points, electrodes are attached and a gentle impulse is switched on. The patient feels a rhythmic pulsing or a mild tightening that gradually turns into a deeper release in the treated muscle.

The session lasts between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the condition being treated. Afterwards, the muscle may be mildly tender for 24 hours — a normal reaction that passes. Electroacupuncture is always combined with manual work and exercises as part of a complete plan.
