Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation (EMS/NMES) uses an electrical impulse that directly activates a muscle or motor nerve. We use it when a muscle isn't working enough due to injury, surgery or prolonged rest — in situations where voluntary effort alone isn't enough to kick-start recovery.

How we work

Electrodes are placed directly on the muscle or motor point. The stimulation produces a visible muscle contraction. The intensity is gradually adjusted to the patient's ability.

What electrical stimulation is and how it works

Electrical stimulation (EMS — Electrical Muscle Stimulation, or NMES — Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) uses an electrical impulse carried through electrodes placed on the skin that directly activates the motor nerve or muscle. The result is a muscle contraction — the same one that happens during a voluntary movement, but triggered from the outside.

This is the key difference compared to other electrotherapy procedures: the goal isn’t just to reduce pain or inflammation, but to directly activate and strengthen the muscle.

When electrical stimulation is necessary

After immobilization — a cast, splint, or rest after surgery. A resting muscle loses strength quickly — visible atrophy begins after as little as 2–3 weeks. EMS activates the muscle and slows down this process even while the patient still can’t move it voluntarily.

After ligament reconstruction (ACL, PCL) — the quadriceps after knee surgery is a classic example. The muscle doesn’t respond to voluntary effort due to inhibition caused by pain and swelling. EMS “bypasses” this block and activates the muscle directly.

Neurological rehabilitation — peripheral paresis, recovery after a stroke, conditions where nerve-muscle communication is impaired. NMES helps re-establish motor patterns.

Preventive use in sports medicine — athletes who can’t train due to injury use EMS to maintain muscle mass and strength during the break.

What happens during the treatment

Electrodes are placed on the muscle belly or on the motor point — the spot on the skin where the nerve enters the muscle and where stimulation is most effective. The current produces a visible contraction — the muscle tightens and relaxes rhythmically according to the set pattern.

The sensation is intense but tolerable — similar to a demanding isometric effort. The intensity is always adjusted to the patient’s condition and increased as the muscle gets stronger.

The session lasts 15–25 minutes and is almost always combined with exercise and manual work as part of a complete rehabilitation programme.
